Welcome to At the Intersections. This week, we begin with the search for new paths forward when established treatments are not sufficient, considering posttraumatic stress disorder through the lenses of clinical definitions, patient monitoring, and neuroscientific interventions. This theme of developing new approaches extends to the natural world, with a look at pedagogical frameworks for training future storm scientists and new systems for classifying the risk to life hidden within the soil.

Can targeting the brain's networks help people with PTSD when standard therapies are not enough?
Many persons with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly among military and Veteran populations, do not experience full recovery with current therapies. This report reviewed emerging interventions guided by neuroscience, specifically deep brain reorienting, virtual reality integrative therapy, neurofeedback, and non-invasive brain stimulation.

What helps or hinders tracking patient progress in PTSD care?
Measurement-based care, a method that uses routine monitoring of patient-reported outcomes to inform clinical decisions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is underutilized. To identify factors impacting its use, researchers conducted a systematic review of articles that examined barriers to and facilitators of this practice.

How is treatment-resistant PTSD defined?
Posttraumatic stress disorder is a complex disorder that often persists despite the use of evidence-based treatments. To investigate this, researchers conducted a systematic review of studies to synthesize existing definitions of treatment-resistant PTSD and examine the criteria used.

What makes a student internship for severe storm science effective?
This research addresses how to effectively educate undergraduate students in severe storms science. The authors performed an analysis of one internship program’s framework by comparing it to pedagogical frameworks and other internship programs.

How many soil species are known to be at risk?
Little is known about the conservation status of most species that depend on soil for survival. To better understand this situation, researchers developed a definition for soil-dependent species to identify them on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
