This week, At the Intersections considers systems of meaning and care, from the language applied to public health measures to the evaluation of educational technologies. We turn to health outcomes for cis women, trans women, and trans men with hepatitis C and examine brain blood flow in individuals with first-episode psychosis. The mechanics of cognition are also explored through new work on how the brain processes visual information. Finally, the issue shifts its focus from the biological to the cosmic, tracking a search for specific molecules in deep space.

What does it mean to call a public health measure coercive?
The term 'coercion' is often used to describe public health measures, but its lack of a clear, consistent definition can lead to problems with policy implementation and public trust. To understand how coercion is defined and justified, researchers conducted a scoping review of the public health literature across five databases.

How have educational technologies for math and literacy been evaluated?
The use of educational technology in schools has grown, yet there is a lack of combined evidence on how these tools are evaluated for math and literacy learning. To investigate this, researchers conducted a systematic review of 44 studies to explore the methodologies, technologies, and assessments used to evaluate EdTech in K-8 education.

Which women and trans persons with hepatitis C are at higher risk for cirrhosis?
Women and gender-diverse people can face structural barriers that raise their risk for hepatitis C virus and make it harder to get care. To study this, researchers described a Canadian cohort of individuals engaged in hepatitis C care who self-identified as cis women, trans women, or trans men.

Is blood flow regulation in the brain altered in individuals with first-episode psychosis?
The underlying reasons for changes in brain blood flow in individuals living with psychosis are not well understood. This study estimated and compared brain blood vessel reactivity using fMRI data from a group of individuals with first-episode psychosis and a control group.

Do cosmic fullerenes release energy in ways we have not seen before?
Identifying and studying the large carbon molecules known as fullerenes in space can be challenging, particularly when their typical chemical signals are obscured. Researchers used observations from the JWST to look at a planetary nebula and compared that information with new quantum chemical calculations.
