Welcome to At the Intersections. This week, we examine points where the physical brain meets behavior and diagnosis, considering how brain structure might correspond to language complexity in psychosis and how patterns of brain activity could help differentiate severe mental illnesses. We also turn to the dynamics of seeking support, looking at the choices university students make after experiencing gender-based violence, and the use of a screening tool for seizure detection by non‐neurophysiologists in intensive care.

Can non-experts use a screening tool to detect seizures in intensive care?
|

|
Delays in detecting seizures in intensive care unit patients are common, which can affect when they receive clinical interventions. Researchers conducted a review by searching multiple scientific databases to identify studies that estimated the diagnostic accuracy of a screening tool, quantitative EEG, when interpreted by non‐neurophysiologists.

The specific disturbances in brain timing for severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder are not clearly defined. To address this, researchers reviewed 62 existing studies, screening and extracting data on brain activity that was measured using magnetoencephalography.

Is the complexity of our brain's folds connected to the complexity of our language?

Researchers are investigating whether the physical complexity of the brain's cortex is associated with the complexity of language in people across the psychosis spectrum. To examine this question, they collected MRI brain scans and audio-recorded speech samples from individuals with first-episode psychosis, those at clinical high-risk for psychosis, and healthy controls.
