Welcome to this edition of At the Intersections. This issue looks at how physical and natural systems respond to external forces, connecting models of wind behavior on structures with carbon processing across soil ecosystems. Alongside these structural and ecological models, we look at approaches to monitoring human biology and behavior, from tools that record simultaneous chemical concentrations in neural tissue to analyses of shared word patterns in conversational speech.

How do soil animals get rid of excess carbon?
|
|
|
Scientists do not fully understand how soil animals release extra carbon when nutrients are scarce or how to accurately model their respiration. The researchers built a soil food web computer model and tested different biological processes using data from three Brazilian tree plantations.

Can a new brain scan measure two chemicals at the same time?
|

|
Imbalances in two brain chemicals, glutamate and glutathione, can signal cognitive disorders, but standard imaging techniques struggle to measure them efficiently. Researchers developed a new brain-scanning technique to capture both chemicals simultaneously, testing it on test objects and five healthy volunteers.
