Welcome to Active Bodies, Active Minds, where we explore the links between structure, sensation, and thought. This week’s issue looks at the spine, from top to bottom, connecting its physical characteristics to both stability and the experience of pain. We also examine the interaction between mental tasks and physical movement, showing how a cognitive challenge can be observed in the mechanics of a footstep.

Does a stiffer neck relate to more reported pain?
This research sought to quantify the association between neck range of motion and patient-reported pain and disability in people with neuromusculoskeletal neck pain. The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 45 observational studies.

How does a mental task alter the mechanics of a footstep in people with cognitive impairment?
Understanding how motor and cognitive functions contribute to mobility impairment requires methods that can detect subtle changes in walking. To evaluate a new analysis algorithm, researchers collected data using ankle-worn accelerometers from participants diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment as they performed preferred walking and dual-task walking activities.
